António de Oliveira Salazar is the face of Portugal’s New State, Europe’s longest standing 20th century dictatorship. The man who governed Portugal from 1928 to 1968 remained steadfast in his ideological and political right-wing posture, unabashedly defending the traditional and conservative institutions and values summarized in the New State’s main slogan: “Deus, Pátria e Família” (“God, Nation, and Family”). Though Salazar never worried about public opinion, he continuously sought public support. His speeches were rare and resembled religious sermons, while his image was carefully crafted and protected.
