Held in Lisbon during the summer months of 1940, the "Exposição do Mundo Português" (Exposition of the Portuguese-Speaking World) was organized to celebrate 800 years of the Portuguese nation and 300 years of Portugal’s liberation from the 60 years of Spanish rule (1580 to 1640). This massive marketing operation, organized by António Ferro, the man appointed by Salazar to direct the Secretariat of National Propaganda (SPN), promoted an image of a humble nation committed to its civilizing mission in the world.
